Boston, MA - Crew Leaders

boston-crewsAre you interested in making a difference in the lives of youth while working outdoors this summer?  The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is currently accepting applications for Commuting Crew Leader positions in Boston, MA for our 2009 Program.

Crew Leader Duties: Co-lead, supervise and mentor teams of eight to ten high school youth, ages 15-18 for six weeks (Mon-Fri. 8hrs/day) completing an assortment of hands-on conservation and restoration projects in Boston city parks; and plan and lead weekly educational field trips.

 

To lead a high school crew, you must:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Possess a valid driver's license 3+ yrs. and an MVR that meets SCA standards
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications or ability to obtain
  • Pass a criminal background check that meets SCA Standards
  • Attend a Crew Leader Orientation and Work Skills Training either:  May 28-June 6 OR June 13-20

2009 Program Dates :   June 29th - August 7th boston-crew

Your SCA crew might:

  • Construct and maintain trails in Boston City parks or for the NPS
  • Improve and conserve wildlife habitats
  • Revitalize urban property reserves
  • Work on a community farm or garden

In addition to supervising service projects, leaders will plan and lead weekly field trips designed to build an ethic of community and environmental stewardship with participants.

Specific qualifications include experience teaching or working with urban youth, ability to maintain safe, productive and enjoyable work environment, strong interest in working with and mentoring urban youth.

Physical Demands and Work Environment: Applicant must be able to:

  • Carry heavy loads up to 40 lbs
  • Use a variety of hand tools
  • Hike and work in a variety of weather conditions
  • Drive a passenger mini-van and/or SUV in a variety of weather conditions

Additional professional development courses including Wilderness First Aid may be offered prior to training.   Salary:  $2,900 DOE
