Rocky Mountain National Park, Summer 2004

PDF Print E-mail

I can’t find enough adjectives to describe my summer with the SCA: thrilling, fascinating, fantastic, enlightening, and inspirational are just the beginning.

Taking an interpretive internship at Rocky Mountain National Park during the summer of 2004 was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made—not only was roving the trails, leading historical ranger hikes, and teaching kids about bears and mountain lions amazingly fun, the experience opened my eyes to the role I can play to protect the environment.  For one, I gained a new appreciation for nature by learning how to immerse myself in it; the backpacking skills I developed there will definitely stick with me for a lifetime.  Through my own explorations, I grasped how important it is for people to feel they are a part of the natural world if they are ever to fight to conserve it.  As an SCA intern, I could guide others in that discovery by bringing them into close contact with the beauties of the park; for who glimpses the views from the Continental Divide or hikes up to an alpine meadow strewn with flowers without being moved to preserve it?  I can honestly say I’ve never had a more rewarding job.
